Effective visuals are composed of three main elements:

  • Centered images

  • Images with text

  • Dialogue bubbles

Here are some recommendations on when and how to use these elements to create a visually cohesive module for your learners.

➡️ For the very first exercise of a module:

1️⃣ A large, single image to introduce the context.

👉 What this offers:

  • Introduces your primary character or main setting effectively.

  • Helps learners identify and understand the key characters to follow.

👉 Our recommendations:

  • Use bold text to highlight important elements (keep the text concise).

  • Avoid adding lengthy paragraphs or dialogues.

2️⃣Using paragraphs to introduce characters

👉 What this offers:

  • Provides a clear way to introduce multiple characters simultaneously.

👉 Our recommendations:

  • Choose a large image if the situation is complex to ensure clarity.

  • Limit one paragraph to describe each character.

➡️ For the following exercises

Once learners have successfully identified the main character or setting, focus on using dialogues and/or concise paragraphs.

📍 If a subsequent scenario introduces a new central character, present them using a large image for clarity wherever feasible.

1️⃣ Dialogue Bubbles

👉 What this offers:

  • Highlights the essential points of a situation through engaging conversations.

  • Puts the learner in the character’s perspective, allowing them to understand and reflect on potential reactions.

👉 Our recommendations:

  • Adopt the learner’s perspective and ask yourself: "Would learners naturally say these words?"

  • Ensure each bubble conveys only one idea for simplicity and focus.

2️⃣ Paragraphs

👉 What this offers:

  • Facilitates the analysis of complex situations.

  • Directs the learner’s attention to specific critical aspects of the scenario.

One paragraph = one idea

👉 Our recommendations:

  • Always pair paragraphs with an image or an icon:

  • If there’s only one paragraph with an icon, add a dialogue bubble to enhance the page’s engagement.

  • Use background visuals or illustrations to help learners contextualise and better grasp the setting of the interaction.
