📢 When designing exercise granules, writing effective feedback can be challenging. Discover our top tips for writing impactful feedback in this article!
❓ What is feedback?
Feedback consists of 1 or 2 sentences that explain to the learner why the chosen answer is correct or incorrect.
🛠️ How to write effective feedback
There are three key approaches:
1️⃣ Explain why the answer is correct or incorrect
↪️ “Soft skills can be developed at any age: adults also improve when they are specifically trained on topics as profound as listening skills or empathy.”
2️⃣ Describe the consequence of a correct/incorrect choice
↪️ “If you don’t acknowledge your counterpart’s objection and immediately offer a counter-argument, they won’t feel heard and may gradually withdraw from the conversation.”
3️⃣ Ask a reflective question
↪️ “A theorem covered in this module contradicts this assumption. Do you remember which one?”
🏋️ Questions to ask yourself to improve feedback
"Do I understand why my choice was incorrect when I read this? Is it concise enough to encourage reading?"
✨ General tips
Our general advice is to write feedback as if you were speaking directly to a learner, asking yourself: "What should I say to help the learner understand their mistake?"
Here are some recommendations applicable to all your feedback:
1️⃣ Be specific
😊 Clear message!
😱 Too general
2️⃣ Avoid redundancy
😊 Informative
😱 Tautological
3️⃣ Keep it under two sentences
😊 Gets to the point
😱 Overwhelms the learner
✨ Specific tips
Here are some tips tailored to each exercise type...
Simple exercise:
❌ Incorrect answer: Describe the negative consequences of the choice and ask a question that might guide the learner.
↪️ "Lisa means well by being efficient, but she risks alienating her client with this question. What could she say to build trust?"
✅ Correct answer: Explain why the answer is correct, describe the positive consequences, and why it’s important.
↪️ "Here, Lisa starts with best practice, showing her client that she’s listening. Building this trust is key to retaining clients!"
Categorization:
❌ Negative feedback: Can be short to avoid repetition. A simple consequence or a question may suffice.
✅ Positive feedback: Can be more detailed, explaining why a particular action is crucial in this context.
Ordering:
❌ Incorrect answer: Mention that another step is important before proceeding (provide a hint).
↪️ "Before scheduling your tasks, another step is crucial for achieving your goals."
✅ Correct answer: Confirm the step’s importance and explain its positive outcomes.
↪️ "Yes, identifying your main objectives is the first step because it allows you to prioritize your actions and focus on what matters most."
